On Display June 20—July 25 at PROJECT CREATE LEONINA ARISMENDI (they/she, 1988 - present, Montevideo, UY) is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist, human and environmental rights advocate, and faith leader. A Journey Through Art, Survival, and Returning Home
Leonina Arismendi’s retrospective at Project Create is an exploration of resilience, reclamation, and the profound desire to return home.
A self-taught artist, Arismendi’s work emerges from the intersection of personal survival and collective struggle. Created over ten years, during moments of trauma—including their time in a domestic violence shelter—these abstract expressionist and mixed-media pieces were originally private acts of healing. Now, as Arismendi prepares to rematriate to Uruguay, they take on new meaning: not just as artifacts of survival, but as offerings to the future.
The term “rematriation” holds a deep personal resonance for Arismendi. Inspired by conversations and teachings from a Matriarch and Abenaki seed keeper, the concept speaks to the return to origins, to reclaiming ancestral connections, and to thriving where roots can take hold. Arismendi reflects on their own life as a seed that grew resiliently despite constriction—finding hope in the thought of being transplanted to fertile, boundless soil. Rematriation is a way to reframe the tragedy of self deportation into a triumphant story of how community, creativity and connections liberated this family.
