Formerly known as Yanina Angelini, Reverend Doctor Leonina Arismendi Zarkovic is an Uruguayan born Queer artist, award winning writer and poet and leading expert in immigration and language justice living and working in the US South.

Leonina holds the title of Mix Trans Latinx DMV 2020.

Art

Leonina is a self-taught neuve-invention painter, muralist and photographer.

Their professional art career expands over ten years, in that time, their work has travelled the world, making its way into collectors, celebrities and world leader’s art collections.

Leonina has held over seven Solo exhibitions across the East Coast and their work sold in New York and DC markets with the highest priced piece at an estimated $10K. Between 2015 and 2017 Leonina founded, directed, curated art and booked and produced shows for Art Mart, a community organizing hub in Downtown Fredericksburg, AM Studios served as the first POC owned LGBTQA+ safe space.

Art Mart closed its doors in July 2017 due to increase white violence from white supremacist hate groups and an association of downtown business owners and non-profit organizations that sought to bring charges of Public Nuisance against Leonina for speaking out against gentrification, cultural appropriation and the racism tourism economy in Fredericksburg. Leonina curated over 40 art exhibitions featuring local, national and international arts, Art Mart’s excursion and praxis as a Revolutionary Art Concept is Leonina’s Magnum Opus. (CV)

Activism

In the summer of 2017 Leonina moved into Safe Harbor Shelter for Survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. A week after moving into the shelter Leonina began organizing with Southerners on New Ground (SONG) and ICE out of RVA Leonina (with their children) lived in the shelter for nine months and after securing a new life, they began serving in the capacity of Member-Leader for the aforementioned organizations for almost two years, up until learning of years of covered abuse and corruption amongst those groups. 

After being disillusioned by the non profit industrial complex, Leonina continue organizing quietly and building Saint Solaris, co-founded by Leonina, Lana de Martinez and Scheldon Williams (known as The Saints) Saint Solaris is the Radical Agency, a business model that prioritizes undocumented workers and creates opportunities with non profits to employ the experts of their experience in the field of immigrant justice. In the summer of 2019 Leonina came together with a diverse group of leaders within the criminal and immigrant justice field and launched Santos en Virginia, a soon to be non profit, the first state wide immigrant bail and defense fund servicing non citizens that are imprisoned in any type of ”correctional” facility in Virginia. Faith

Together with the Saints, Leonina travels across the state holding conversations with churches on Sanctuary practices, LGBTQA+ issues and Decolonization and providing pulpit supply.

They serve as Co-Chair of the Virginia Poor People’s Campaign as well as on the National Prophetic Council for the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. Reverend Leonina is a member of the Tree of Life Social Justice Church.

Education

Leonina teaches on radical faith and popular education with the Saints.

They also provide education from a decolonized, womanist lens on sex, gender and consent based relationships, trans parenting, language justice, decolonized history and cultural appropriation in the arts.
